Is it acceptable for Christians to tour pagan archaeological sites? We do understand that Christians touring pagan Archaeological sites don’t go to worship but to just visit and understand the historical significance. But how does God feel about it?

God’s instruction is to destroy all

Num 33:51-52 “Speak to the children of Israel, and say to them: ‘When you have crossed the Jordan into the land of Canaan, then you shall drive out all the inhabitants of the land from before you, destroy all their engraved stones, destroy all their molded images, and demolish all their high places;

When the children of Israel was about to inherit the promised land, God gave specific instruction to destroy all pagan things from the land including the engraved stones, moulded images and all their high places.

Deut 12:2-3 “You shall utterly destroy all the places where the nations which you shall dispossess served their gods, on the high mountains and on the hills and under every green tree. And you shall destroy their altars, break their sacred pillars, and burn their wooden images with fire; you shall cut down the carved images of their gods and destroy their names from that place.

God doesn’t want the children of Israel to just destroy pagan high places, their temples and their altars but destroy even the pagan god’s name from that place. This clear instruction to Israelite people and to us shows how much God hates pagan places and even against paganism having archaeological significance.

Destroy the abomination of pagans

1Kgs 11:7 Then Solomon built a high place for Chemosh the abomination of Moab, on the hill that is east of Jerusalem, and for Molech the abomination of the people of Ammon.

The high places (or) the places of worship of Idols on the elevated ground were referred as abominations in the Bible. An abomination in ancient Israel is still an abomination in modern times.

Mal 3:6a “For I, Yahweh, don’t change;

Heb 13:8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

God doesn’t change. He is same yesterday, today and forever. What He hated a thousand years ago, He still hates with the same aversion.

2Kgs 18:3-4 And he did what was right in the sight of the LORD, according to all that his father David had done. He removed the high places and broke the sacred pillars, cut down the wooden image and broke in pieces the bronze serpent that Moses had made; for until those days the children of Israel burned incense to it, and called it Nehushtan.

It is right in the sight of the LORD to destroy all pagan places.

Conclusion

Christians must not visit pagan archaeological sites. God wants to destroy even their name from that place. Hence, Christians touring pagan archaeological or historical sites are unacceptable before God.
